ASSESSORS MEETING MINUTES
MAY 8, 2003
7:00 P.M. Called meeting to order. Present: Ellen Abelson, Paula Keefe, Richard
Gorden and Mark Mazur
The Board unanimously elected Ellen Abelson to be Chairman of the Board for the
coming year.
The Board reviewed and then approved as amended the minutes from 4/24/03.
The Board reviewed and then signed a letter releasing a total of $500,000 from the
overlay accounts.
The Board read a letter from a taxpayer concerning the FY2003 abatement he was
granted. The Board reviewed his abatement and concluded that the amount abated was reasonable. The Board directed the Administrative Assessor to write a letter in response to the taxpayer.
The Board discussed Town Meeting warrant articles that relate to our office. The
Board directed the Administrative Assessor to present information to Town Meeting, on the financial implications of proposed changes to exemptions, if asked to do so. The Board also directed him to express the Board’s opposition to the petition article urging the Selectmen to adopt a 20% residential exemption.
The Board appointed Paul Keefe, Robert Merritt and Anne Carney, three former
members of the Sharon Board of Assessors, to Deputy Assessor positions. These are non-paying positions that will allow the office to make use of these experienced individuals.
The Board voted to request authorization from the state to issue preliminary tax bills
for fiscal year 2004, if necessary. This will not obligate us to issue preliminary bills, it simply gives us the option of doing so.
